Design Your Own Research Project
Independent Study (ALE 2993) is for students who want to develop and carry out their own project with mentorship from Dr. Nouri-Aiin. This can be lab-based, field-based, or analytical.
Project Types:
- Student-initiated: e.g., SURF, FOUR, or Honors College thesis
- Hybrid: combine your idea with aspects of ongoing lab research
- Exploratory: pilot a concept before a larger thesis or grant proposal
Why Choose Independent Study?
- Maximum flexibility and ownership of the research process
- Opportunity to pursue niche or interdisciplinary questions
- Great preparation for graduate school or competitive fellowships
Credit & Commitment
- Credits: 1–3 credits (~40–120 hours/semester)
- Activities: literature review, experimental design, field/lab work, analysis, writing
- Learning Contract: Required and approved by instructor and College
- Weekly check-ins and a final deliverable (report, presentation, or portfolio)
Note: Best for self-driven students who are comfortable steering their own project with guidance.
